Project type
UI Design, Interactive Media and Technology
Date
August 2023
Location
Raleigh, NC
The Arcade is a touch screen kiosk that hosts games designed and developed by NC State game design students. It is housed in the Innovation Studio at the D.H. Hill, Jr Library on NC State's campus for thousands of students, faculty, and staff to interact with.
This platform's interface was designed in Figma by myself and then coded out in React using JavaScript, JSON, and CSS by fellow developer Elliott Schultz.
There are different gaming capabilities built into this kiosk. Many of the games uploaded onto this platform are multimodal, and can be played with touch screen, keyboard commands, and gaming consoles.
The landing page presents a carousel-style menu, where the user can swipe left and right to choose games. after a few seconds of idle, the game presented in the center prompts the user to learn more, and eventually to play it. The "learn more" button takes the user to a different page to learn about the backstory of the game, the developers behind it, how to play, and more.
While the games uploaded to the kiosk at present are student-made, a couple of placeholders are brought in from itch.io, such as Midnight Scenes and Sokfest, and are not made by NC State students. These game images from itch.io were used during the design and development process to demonstrate how the kiosk would present games. One of the pictures in the gallery includes these images.
